On September 30, a public lecture entitled "The World of Handicraftsmen in German Medieval Cities" was held at Satellite Plaza with 25 participants ranging from high school students to those in their 70s.
First, Toshiyuki Tanaka of Associate Professor Institute of Human and Social Sciences Faculty of Humanities Professor gave a lecture on the theme of "The Establishment of the Zumft Rule System" about the handicrafts that supported the urban economy in the 14th and 15th centuries and urban autonomy through handicraftsmen's solidarity. He then went on to explain the theme of "the world of the craftsman tortured by honor," focusing on the concept of honor that emerged in the process of resolving disputes that often arose in the hierarchical world of handicrafts.
Students commented that they felt a common interest in social status and honor even though times have changed, and that they gained new knowledge from the lecture, which overlapped with the flow of Japanese history.
