On July 28, Kanazawa University held a public lecture "Learning about Natural Disasters in Kanazawa through Hazard Maps and Fieldwork" in Kanazawa Ekimae Satellite. 7 students from high school to 70's attended the lecture.
Associate Professor Tatsuto Aoki from the Institute of Human and Social Sciences, Faculty of Regional Development Studies explained how Kanazawa Castle was built on river terraces and how Kanazawa was formed by repeated earthquakes, floods, eruptions, and collapses. Next, he reviewed the video clips of the Asano River flood in July 2009 and the Great East Japan Earthquake, and stressed the importance of raising awareness of disaster prevention on a daily basis. In the latter half of the presentation, he took the students on a fieldwork tour of the city, explaining the fault line at the Musashigatsuji intersection, the stone wall at Ootebori, the door stone at Otemon, the geological formation at Shiratori road, the structure at the Owari-cho intersection, the surface of the Asano River, and the flood damage in Kazuemachi.
Some of the participants commented, "I learned that a cliff was created by the power of nature, and a castle was built around it, making it a castle town," and "It was a memorable lecture because I was able to actually see it."
