On August 4, a public lecture entitled "Philosophy Café: is success hard work or luck: thinking through the writings of Michael Sandel" was held at the Kanazawa Ekimae Satellite. 24 participants, ranging from high school students to those in their 80s, attended the lecture.
First, Assistant Professor Chihiro Kariya of Articulation Center for High School and University asked students about their impression of the phrase "hard work pays off" and the "parental mess" issue, and quoted actual examples and ancient Greek thought to consider what "rightness" means. Next, he introduced high school reading circle, and discussed "Is life what you want it to be?" referring to the World Values Survey. Then, he explained Mr. Sandel's philosophy with the key words "ableism" and "wisdom," and discussed its applying to the Japanese case.
In the latter half of the workshop, participants were divided into small groups and shared their impressions of the lecture. Students commented that the workshop was meaningful, as they were able to reaffirm their own understanding and gain new perspectives from other participants' opinions.
