On May 31, Frontier Science and Social Co-creation Initiative held the "Gokayama Spring Rice Planting Experience & Village Tour" as part of Project: AERU in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, and 12 Kanazawa University students participated in this program.
The students experienced traditional rice planting by hand in the Gokayama Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village, which is designated as a World Heritage Site. After squaring up the paddy field with a wooden frame called a "Korogashi," they carefully planted seedlings by hand.
They also participated in a tour of the Ainokura Gassho-Zukuri Village organized by students of Toyama Prefectural Nanto Taira High School, where they heard explanations about the history of Ainokura Village and the characteristics of Gassho-Zukuri architecture. In September, the students will participate in harvesting rice by hand and hanging rice in the field. Students commented, "I enjoyed planting rice for the first time and seeing Gassho-Zukuri because I had never seen them before," and "I enjoyed the village tour. It was good to experience values that cannot be seen only by seeing them."
In December 2014, Kanazawa University concluded a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, and in April 2016, with the support of Nanto City, established "Kanazawa University Seminar House SUKECHI" in the Gokayama Ainokura Gassho-Zukuri Village. In addition, in FY 2008, we were registered as an owner under the name of "Kanazawa University Seminar House SUKECHI" for the terraced rice field owner project in the village, and we are continuing to offer rice planting and harvesting experiences. In addition to supporting the revitalization of the Gokayama region, we are also working to provide opportunities to learn about local traditional culture interacting with students and community members.??
